Onana was calm during VAR check

The Reds were forced to sit back and protect our slender lead during the final knockings of our triumph in M16, with Andre called into action on multiple occasions.

But it wasn't until the very end when controversy surrounded our new no.24, with Gary O'Neil's side appealing at length, after Onana collided with substitute Kaladzic inside the penalty area.

With VAR initially opting to check the decision, referee Simon Hooper was not told to consult the on-field monitor, but headed over to the touchline to book O'Neil for his protests.

"No, I don't worry," began the United goalkeeper, when quizzed on the tense wait by MUTV's Stewart Gardner.

"I thought because at the end of the day, I [have] made my decision and you earn the right to make the right choice.

"Sometimes yes, sometimes not. At the end of the day, you learn from mistakes. I trust the referees. What they are doing is not easy, especially now with the VAR.

"So I was calm. I knew it wasn't [a penalty]. It was just a contact in there. So I'm calm and, for me, I'm very happy with this victory.’’

Having twiced denied Fabio Silva late on at the Theatre of Dreams, Andre showed his quality on many occasions during his competitive debut, keeping out Matheus Cunha too with an equally as impressive stop.

It helped ensure the Cameroonian was voted our Man of the Match.

Being made to work hard for our first three points of the campaign, the former Internazionale man was keen to emphasise the strong mentality on display across the 90 minutes.

"The team showed character in the end," added Andre.

"We showed we are a good club, we have good players and we are used to performing on this platform.

"So we will show a lot of character because it is not easy. Like I said, we play games we faced a very good opponent and, here, I'm happy.

"I'm happy with the victory and I'm happy for the clean sheet."

With plenty of tough tests to come in the shape of Tottenham, Nottingham Forest and Arsenal early on in 2023/24, Onana explained how starting the season with three points was the perfect way to begin.

"[It was] great and also an important victory for us first," he added. "And also the clean sheet is what we want.

"But at the end of the day, the most important thing is the victory."
