Andre Onana in action against Rangers

Onana: We are going to fight for everything

Sunday 21 July 2024 09:59

Andre Onana feels Manchester United are well prepared to have a much-improved season and insists Erik ten Hag's team will "fight for everything" in 2024/25.

The Reds earned a first win of pre-season in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Rangers, which sets us up nicely ahead of our trip to the United States for Tour 2024, presented by Snapdragon.

It will bring back fond memories for Onana, who made his debut for the club across the pond a year ago, and he is relishing the challenges ahead.

“Very exciting because my first game at United was in America so I joined the team there,” Andre told MUTV's Zarah Connolly.

Andre is optimistic about what lies ahead for the Reds, ahead of Tour 2024, presented by Snapdragon…

“It’s very exciting, not only for the coming games in pre-season but for the rest of this season. It’s going to be difficult but we are well prepared, we are preparing well this season and it’s going to be really nice.

“We are going to fight for everything this year, last season we already know what happened and of course we ended very good but it was a difficult season for all of us. So this year, nice things are coming.”

The goalkeeper was pleased to make his first appearance of pre-season against Rangers and was the only player to complete the 90 minutes in Edinburgh, taking over the captain’s armband from Casemiro for the second half.

“Very good, I’m happy to be back, the team is working hard,” said Onana. “We faced a very good opponent, happy for the victory, the way we play and, yeah, we keep going. There’s a long way to go and I’m very happy.

“It’s always difficult to play against this opponent but the demand is always high when you are a Manchester United player. It’s important to start good and to fight for everything. This year, it will be very nice for us so we are ready.”

Some 21 players received vital minutes on the pitch on Saturday and Onana knows the significance of pre-season, and unity in the squad, to ensure everyone is ready to perform as a team when the competitive action returns.

“Of course, it’s very important to have that [togetherness] straight away and the result shows everything,” Andre told us in the tunnel at Murrayfield after the win over Rangers.

“When we are together, we can beat everyone so it’s what we have to do, it’s the way we have to play, we have to be together and we have to enjoy this because in the end of the day it’s about us, it’s not important what the opponents do. It’s very important what we do, what we prepare, how we prepare the game, the pre-season.

“We have to be very good on the ball and keep position, we have to make some blocks because the opponents have a lot of tactics but if we follow the instructions of the manager and we stay together, everything is going to be alright.”

He added: “It’s always nice to have a clean sheet but, like I always say, it’s for all of us at the end of the day. I’m not alone on the pitch, it’s about the 11 and everyone on the plane who came over here.

"First of all, I want to congratulate all of my team-mates for fighting together, they showed a lot of character, a lot of team spirit and I think it’s the way we have to go.”

The Reds are next in action against our Premier League rivals Arsenal in Los Angeles on Sunday 28 July at 01:00 BST. Like all of our pre-season friendlies, the game will be shown live on MUTV so subscribe now.
