Cole: Edinburgh game is one to enjoy

Saturday 15 July 2023 10:00

Manchester United legend Andy Cole is encouraging fans in Scotland to seize a rare opportunity of seeing the Reds play north of the border.

The Treble-winning striker is looking forward to watching his former club perform in Edinburgh, against French side Lyon, after enjoying the first pre-season friendly in which Erik ten Hag's largely youthful side defeated Leeds United 2-0.

Tickets for Wednesday's game at Murrayfield are still available and Cole is clear on what fans who are still undecided about attending should do.
"Go and enjoy it," said Andy. "It's not as if Manchester United come to town every other day.

"It's two very good teams, playing good football and looking to get themselves fit, so it's a game you want to go to and enjoy.

"When United are in town, there's a fanfare. I've had the opportunity to not just experience it as a player but as a club ambassador as well. The numbers [of fans] that turn out in pre-season are absolutely crazy.

"So I'd advise anyone who's got the opportunity, go and do it."
The choice of stadium may have raised one or two eyebrows given Murrayfield is an iconic rugby union venue. But Andy's all for it, having once played for United at the home of another sport, the Melbourne Cricket Ground on the post-Treble tour of 1999.

The Reds returned there last summer in fact, beating local side Melbourne Victory 4-1 in only Ten Hag's second game in charge.

"I think it will be brilliant [at Murrayfield]," enthused Cole.

"We had the opportunity in Australia to play at a cricket ground. That doesn't happen. But I can say I've played at this major stadium in cricket, although I actually played football there. So I think to do it in Scotland it's brilliant.

"It's a different kind of stadium, a different atmosphere, but it'll be good fun."
