Angelino: The 5-0 defeat was tough to take

Monday 07 December 2020 16:38

Angelino says Manchester United's 5-0 masterclass against RB Leipzig really hurt the German side, ahead of Tuesday rematch at the Red Bull Arena.

The Spanish left-back, on loan from Manchester City, has been in fine form for Leipzig this season and is, in fact, the club's top scorer this term with six goals in 16 appearances from all competitions. The 23-year-old, who has also chipped in with four assists from his wing-back position, could not add to that tally when United last met the Bundesliga outfit.

As a City man, the defeat at Old Trafford added extra disappointment for Angelino, as he explained at Monday's pre-match press conference.

Angelino also played against United last season, when we won 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in December 2019.

"It was a tough one to take," the defender told reporters. "Any team that beats you with five goals, it’s hard to accept it. Even more because I was at City in Manchester, it hurts even more."

For United, a draw will be enough to secure qualification into the knock-out stage of the Champions League. If it is to be a level scoreline, Leipzig will need to rely on some help from Istanbul Basaksehir, who then must beat Paris Saint-Germain in order for the Red Bulls to progress. Therefore, expect Leipzig to go all-out for a win.

"It’s a final for us tomorrow," Angelino explained. "We have to be very focused and to be as fresh as possible, and hopefully turn everything around so we can forget the last game."

Manager Julian Nagelsmann also emphasised the importance of Leipzig bouncing back from the 5-0 defeat when asked by reporters.

“Well, of course the result doesn’t play such a big role because it’s different pre-conditions,” the 33-year-old said in his press conference.

“With a victory we will make it into the next round. Of course, we cannot have the match equalised because we lost a direct competition with them [last time] but we have analysed the match, seen where the players weren’t so good in certain situations. We lost maybe some duels in the first leg, we tried to have the numeric advantage, we want to recover a lot of balls and be better in the game.”

The young manager, who guided Leipzig to the semi-finals in last season's Champions League, says he has figured out what went wrong at Old Trafford. However, Nagelsmann still emphasised that facing United will be another tough test for his side.

“We were a little too afraid at the start, we can add a lot and improve, especially in the final third we can do a lot better. They defended really well but we can’t say they played really well. We have to create and search for our opportunities.”

“We are aware that we are facing United. If they are trailing, they can turn around the match, they can still win matches. They’ve shown that in the last matches, even after going behind, so we have to wait until the referee ends the match actually. We have to fight until the very end to get the three points.”
