Martial scores United's first league hat-trick since 2013

Wednesday 24 June 2020 19:55

Anthony Martial is the first Manchester United player to score a hat-trick in the Premier League since Robin van Persie's treble against Aston Villa in 2013.

The Frenchman was in clinical form at Old Trafford as he put Sheffield United to the sword in our first home match after the restart.

It took only seven minutes for the no.9 to convert Marcus Rashford's driven cross and he added a second before the break with another adroit finish to an Aaron Wan-Bissaka centre.

Remember this strike by Robin van Persie?

The moment many United fans have been waiting for unfortunately came in front of a largely empty stadium, but it will have meant a lot to Martial when he confidently dinked over Simon Moore, following an astounding team move and Rashford's second assist of the evening.

It was a great night's work for the striker, who is now level in the scoring charts with Rashford on 19, as he was one of five players who made way for a quintet of substitutes with 10 minutes remaining.

Van Persie was the last Red to score three times in a single league fixture, when he bagged all the goals in a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa that clinched the title on 22 April 2013. One of them was the stupendous volley from Wayne Rooney's searching pass that was an absolute classic.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic bagged a treble in the Europa League tie against Saint-Etienne in 2017, Wayne Rooney hit a hat-trick against Club Brugge in a Champions League qualifier in 2015 and now Martial gets to keep a match-ball after his showing against the Blades.
