Ole gives update on Martial progress

Wednesday 28 July 2021 07:00

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided an encouraging update on Anthony Martial, as we approach August and the start of the 2021/22 season.

The French attacker hasn’t been seen in action for United since the 3-1 defeat to Leicester City in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final in March.

Martial suffered a knee injury the following week, while playing for France against Kazakhstan in a World Cup qualifier.

The issue ruled our no.9 out of the final two months of the campaign, while he also missed out on Didier Deschamps’ 26-man squad for Euro 2020, with Les Bleus ultimately knocked out by Switzerland in the round of 16.

But now Solskjaer has revealed that Martial is once again working hard at Carrington as he bids to make it back into the first-team picture.

And while Anthony is not yet ready to join in with the rest of the squad, his imminent return – after Diogo Dalot, Donny van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes all took part in training this week – boosts Ole’s options after a pre-season which has seen him having to work a blend between young prospects and more experienced players.

“Yes, there will be more players coming,” Ole told us on Tuesday.

“Anthony Martial has also joined us, but he’s not joined the team training yet. He’s recovering from the knee injury and that looks good.

“The rest of them will drop in after their well-earned holidays because some of them needed them and they deserved them.”

Alex Telles is Solskjaer’s main injury concern at the moment, as the Brazilian is likely to be out until September, although goalkeeper Dean Henderson has recovered from the hip injury which forced him to pull out of the England squad on the eve of the Euros.
