Martial has been treated gently after suffering a hamstring problem in pre-season, and responded with three goals in two substitute appearances, against Manchester City and Omonia Nicosia, following an outing in the 2-1 win over Liverpool in August.

Ten Hag suggested after the victory on Merseyside that it would take 24 hours to assess the centre-forward's situation.

"Not [training] today, we will see before Sunday," explained Ten Hag, when asked for the latest on Martial during the press conference.

“I have several talks with him about that [this season’s injury problems],” Erik added.

“It's really disappointing for him. But I think all the minutes he played well, even on Sunday. He made the assist for Antony and played very well. He fell out and it's frustrating for him.”

United face Omonia on Thursday night, looking to apply more pressure on leaders Real Sociedad in Group E of the Europa League.

The Reds have six points, three behind the Spanish side, who have won each of their three games in the competition.

Sunday's assignment is a Premier League home game with in-form Newcastle United.
