Aoife Mannion says that the mood in the Manchester United Women’s camp is “buzzing” after the Reds overcame Reading to start the new WSL season with a win.

The Reds triumphed 2-0 against the Royals on the league’s opening night to ensure the perfect start to the new campaign.

Mannion, formerly of Manchester City, Birmingham City and Aston Villa, made her competitive debut for United and played the full 90 minutes, helping her new team register a clean sheet and claim the victory.

Mannion: We're absolutely buzzing

Aoife Mannion gave an insight into the mood in the United Women camp after our season-opening win...

After the final whistle, the 25-year-old went to the pitchside interviewing area to speak about her first game for the club and the feeling among the group following the result.

“We’re absolutely buzzing,” the defender told MUTV.

“If someone would have said before the game that we’d have got two goals and a clean sheet we’d have taken that.

“In the first 10 minutes, it took us a little [while to get into the game], but after that I felt like we dominated.”
It is the start of a new era for the team under head coach Marc Skinner, who has arrived this summer alongside Mannion, and four other summer signings.

Having been able to get to know her new team-mates better during pre-season, our no.5 is enjoying the togetherness of the dressing room and is now eager to kick on after Friday’s result.

“We’re all proud of each other,” she said.

“We start as we mean to go on. We’ve got high hopes for this season and tonight was a statement of intent.”
As well as debuting for the club, it was also Mannion’s first chance to play in front of her new supporters on home soil.

With that in mind, and the fact that fans have been missing from the stands over the last year or so due to the pandemic, the centre-back insists it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for both her, and the rest of the Reds.

“It means so much to the girls that the fans are here, the atmosphere is electric.

“I think Leigh [Sports Village] is the best stadium in the league at the moment and I can’t wait to come back.”
