Altay's Turkey into the last eight

Turkey took the final remaining quarter-final spot at Euro 2024 with an exciting 2-1 victory over Austria.

United keeper Altay Bayindir watched on from the bench as his side made a dream start in Leipzig. Arda Guller's corner from the right caused chaos inside the Austria six-yard box and Merih Demiral capitalised to slam the ball high into the net.

The defender's goal, inside the opening minute, proved to be the only one of a frenetic first half, with referee Artur Dias happy to let the game flow. However, Ralf Rangnick's side were a whisker away from an equaliser when Christoph Baumgartner somehow failed to convert from close range.

Altay Bayindir was an unused substitute as his side slugged it out with Austria.

Austria carved out a string of fine chances after the break but Marko Arnautovic was thwarted by the legs of the advancing Mert Gunok, before Konrad Laimer and Stefan Posch also passed up inviting openings.

Instead, Demiral remarkably notched his second of the night as the big centre-back met another Guler corner with an unstoppable header to double the lead, just before the hour mark.

It demanded a response from Austria and an enthralling contest was enhanced further when, seven minutes later, ex-Red Marcel Sabitzer swung in a corner that was headed down by Posch for substitute Michael Gregoritsch to find the roof of the net.

Baumgartner was off target with two headers but the biggest drama was saved for the final seconds, After Baris Yilmaz almost made it safe, Baumgartner looked certain to force extra-time when he nodded goalwards. However, Gunok pulled off a miraculous stop to preserve the lead and send his nation through.

Earlier in the day, the Netherlands comfortably saw off Romania with a 3-0 success.

Cody Gakpo opened the scoring with a near-post finish before two late strikes by Doytell Malen put the seal on an impressive performance by Ronald Koeman's men.

The results mean there is no repeat of the Austria versus Netherlands tie in the group stages, as Turkey face the Dutch on Saturday.
