Axel Tuanzebe has signed for Ipswich Town on a one-year deal, with the option of a further year.

The defender left Manchester United at the end of his contract in the summer and has been weighing up his future.

After training with the Championship side, he has agreed to link up with former Reds coach Kieran McKenna at Portman Road, as the Tractor Boys look to build on an impressive start to the season.

McKenna has already raided Old Trafford for the services of Brandon Williams, after the full-back sealed a season-long loan move to Suffolk.

Axel was a popular member of the squad at United after breaking through the Academy and showing his leadership qualities and defensive prowess.

The centre-back made his senior debut in an FA Cup victory over Wigan Athletic in January 2017 and went on to make 37 appearances for the Reds in total, 19 in the Premier League.

There was a proud moment for Tuanzebe and his family when he captained the team in a Carabao Cup tie against his hometown club Rochdale, in September 2019.

His final appearance for us came in the 2021 Europa League final against Villarreal.

Axel has had loan spells with Aston Villa, Napoli and Stoke City and will be eager to get started at his new club, with Ipswich striving to challenge for promotion.

Town's next match is away to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday 16 September, after the international break.

Meanwhile, another Academy product released in the summer, Charlie Wellens, has signed a deal with Reading in League One. The 20-year-old is now a team-mate again of Charlie Savage's at the Royals.

Everybody at United would like to wish Axel and Charlie the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond, and thank them for all their efforts at the club.
