Schweinsteiger: Casemiro is one of the best

Friday 09 December 2022 09:40

Former Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger believes that current Red Casemiro is one of the best in the world in his position and has shared what he thinks makes the Brazilian so special.

Schweinsteiger is currently out in Qatar covering the World Cup for German TV broadcaster ARD but took some time in the break between games to jump on a video call with MUTV’s Mark Sullivan this week to discuss the tournament, United’s links to it and more.

The 2014 Word Cup winner has been privy to a close-up view of this year’s competition, and spoke of his admiration for Casemiro’s game, as one of the tournament’s standout performers so far.

Q&A part one | Bastian Schweinsteiger dissects Germany's World Cup exit, reveals his winner & analyses Casemiro’s form…

"He is one of the best, definitely in that position, at the moment,” Schweinsteiger explained to us, in the first part of an exclusive interview, which you can watch above.

“He sniffs the danger quite well. He is a good passer. He scored an amazing goal against Switzerland as well and he is a very important piece for the Brazilian national team.

“He is one of the leaders there, and you can see that, and you can feel that and, yeah, I hope he can bring the sharpness back on the United field as well.

“But he's doing a very good job at the World Cup, yes."
Casemiro is currently preparing for Brazil’s quarter-final tie with Croatia later today (15:00 GMT) as the five-time winners look to reach the next phase of the competition.

Schweinsteiger has been impressed by several teams at this year’s edition but thinks the Selecao are poised to end their 20-year wait for another global honour.

"For me, when I saw live the Brazilian national team, I must say they looked very, very sharp.

“They played very well with the ball and also I was really surprised, positively surprised about their backline. How they defend, especially [Eder] Militao, Marquinhos and Thiago Silva and of course, in front of them sitting, Casemiro was like doing a great job there.

Schweinsteiger is impressed by the nation managed by his former boss Louis van Gaal and featuring two ex-Reds.

“Offensively, talent. Vinicius, Neymar, even Raphinha and also Rodrygo from the bench. They have Gabriel Jesus [although he is now injured], those players, Richarlison up front.

“I mean, they look very sharp. I think that’s the team to beat."

Keep your eyes peeled for the second part of our exclusive interview with Bastian Schweinsteiger to come on Saturday in the United App and on ManUtd.com.
