Manchester United's on-loan left-back Brandon Williams scored a superb solo goal at the weekend, in Ipswich Town's 4-2 victory over Preston North End in the Championship.

The full-back has started to show his capabilities at Portman Road, thriving under ex-United coach Kieran McKenna who raided his former club to sign the defender on a season-long loan deal.

Williams' incredible strike helped Town to maintain their excellent start to the campaign, moving them eight points clear of North End to sit two adrift of leaders Leicester City, in second spot in the table.

The defender produced an all-action display throughout and was praised by McKenna, in his interview after the game.

"The second was an incredible goal and Brandon showed that drive and determination all game," said the Tractor Boys boss. "We needed that today.

"[It was] a good performance, he’s getting stronger game by game. Getting back into good habits as a football player and as a defender, on and off the ball.

"He’s getting back towards the levels that I know he’s capable of but I think, more importantly, it’s about pushing him past those levels because he’s young and hopefully he’s got some good years in his career and big moments ahead of him."

McKenna added: "It’s about getting back to doing all the right things. He’s been a really good contributor this last month, with his performances on both sides of the pitch, with the versatility he brings to the squad.

"I think it’s clear to see the aggression and the positivity in his game, on and off the ball, that supporters can really get behind and that will endear you to team-mates as well.

"We’re happy to have him here, he knows he’s got a lot of work still to do but I think it’s been a few weeks that he’ll take a lot of confidence from to continue working hard next week.”

As his manager said, the United Academy graduate has shown his versatility by operating on both sides of the defence since the move, and scored a diving header to salvage a point in the 1-1 draw at Huddersfield Town in the side's last away fixture.

The 23-year-old is really making a big impact with the Suffolk side and their next Championship outing is on Friday 20 October, when they will travel to Rotherham United for a game Reds fans can watch live on Sky Sports.
