Bruno expects more set-piece rewards for Reds

Wednesday 23 February 2022 11:29

Bruno Fernandes believes Manchester United will prove capable of scoring more goals from set-pieces after Harry Maguire headed home Luke Shaw's delivery at Leeds United last weekend.

Much had been made of the Reds not scoring from a corner in the Premier League this term but, as Bruno acknowledges, there has been a lot of bad luck in this respect and it was only a matter of time before the hard work on the training ground paid off.

As a clever set-piece taker, the Portugal international is hoping it can be an area to exploit in the coming weeks, starting in what promises to be a tough Champions League round-of-16 encounter at Atletico Madrid.

"I hope we get more goals from set-pieces from now," the in-form midfielder told club media's Mark Sullivan before flying out to Spain. "Obviously, everyone has been working a lot on that.

"When you don't have the rewards for the work we have been doing, it's something we get a bit sad [about] but obviously we scored now and it's about having the same focus when we do the corners, the free-kicks and whatever it is, and score the goals.

"You know, sometimes the delivery is not really good or the header is not really good," he admitted. "Sometimes, we're unlucky with some rebounds in the box and, say, some offsides. That's it.

"It's time to get the focus in all of the game, when we have to get that chance to attack the goal of them by the set-piece and having the same focus on doing what we have done in the training sessions what we've been working on for all this period, to get the results."

We've had to wait a while for a set-piece goal, but this belter from Harry Maguire was well worth it...

Bruno has been a real creative force in this season's Champions League, registering the most assists in the group stages with six.

Indeed, that matches his total in the Premier League this term, with his latest coming on Sunday when he set up Anthony Elanga's clincher in the entertaining 4-2 win over Leeds.

Bruno has nine goals in the top flight in 2021/22 but will be looking to get off the mark in Europe tonight (Wednesday), as he seeks his 50th strike for the club since signing from Sporting.
