Why Bruno gave Rashford the penalty

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has explained why he handed the penalty responsibilities over to Marcus Rashford, during our 3-0 win over Everton in the Premier League.

After Anthony Martial was brought down inside the area by former Reds captain Ashley Young, most would have thought usual penalty taker Bruno would be the favourite to step up.

However, the Portugal international opted to pass the ball over to Marcus on Merseyside, who made no mistake from twelve yards.

Explaining his decision post-match, Bruno insisted that it seemed like the decent thing to do.

Bruno lauds the impact of United's less experienced first-team players after the win over Everton...

“[I did it] because I felt Marcus [Rashford] needed a little bit of confidence, he needed his goal,” Bruno told Sky Sports.

“Marcus is an excellent penalty taker too, I am 100% sure he could score that penalty.

“It is not about who takes it, it is about scoring and Marcus did it perfectly.”

Netting his second goal of the season in the process, many supporters will now hope his strike can provide a huge boost.

With Galatasaray and Newcastle both to come in the space of the next seven days, Fernandes believes the England international can now kick on and replicate the form we saw last season, when he netted 30 times in all competitions.

One player edged our fan poll after United's big win on Merseyside.

“I think we all know strikers and wingers want to score goals, they need to score, that is part of their game,” added Fernandes.

“It gives you more of a boost and as you saw after the goal Marcus was unstoppable. He could take on everyone.

“Sometimes you need this opportunity to get your confidence back and Marcus has been great for us. Last year he was amazing so therefore everyone's expectations for this season have been a lot higher.

“It is just about getting his goals back and everyone saying he is world class again.”
