Bruno's hat-trick one for the record books

Bruno Fernandes was instrumental in Manchester United's pulsating 5-1 victory over rivals Leeds United at Old Trafford, as he netted a stunning hat-trick.

It was the first treble in the opening fixture of the season for the club since MUTV favourite Lou Macari in 1977 against Birmingham City.

The Portuguese Magnifico's first goal of the afternoon came in the 30th minute after latching on to a through ball from Paul Pogba on the edge of the penalty area, before firing past Illan Meslier.

Bruno's second arrived 10 minutes after half-time as he evaded Junior Firpo with a clever turn inside the penalty area to make space for a shot, which looked to have been cleared off the line, but referee Paul Tierney awarded the goal after consulting his watch.

United's no.18 completed his hat-trick on the hour mark after finding space in behind the Leeds defence to lash a half-volley into the net.

Bruno has now scored five goals in two home games against Marcelo Bielsa's side, including his brace in last season's 6-2 victory at Old Trafford.

There have been other notable hat-tricks from United players in past clashes with Leeds, with Andy Ritchie netting a perfect trio of goals (head, left foot, right foot) as an 18-year-old in a dominant 4-1 victory in 1979.

Red legends Dennis Viollett and Stan Pearson have both also bagged hat-tricks against rivals Leeds in 1959 and 1951 respectively.

Bruno will now be looking to add to his tally of goals in our next fixture, which takes place against Southampton on 22 August at St Mary's stadium.
