Bruno: Donny is working hard in the gym
Bruno Fernandes has been back training with his Manchester United team-mates for just over a week and our talisman admits one player’s improved physique has impressed him already.
When pressed, Bruno reserves special praise for midfield team-mate Donny van de Beek and the more muscular physique the Dutchman has developed.
Our Netherlands international was ruled out of the recent European Championship with an injury that was sustained on the tournament’s eve, and he seems to have put his time off to good use.
As many fans have noticed in our exclusive coverage of training, van de Beek appears to be more robust as he prepares for a second season at United, determined to build on his first campaign as a Red.
In our interview at the training camp in Scotland, which you can read in full on Thursday, Fernandes delivers this assessment of the squad and how diligent the players have all been on holiday.
“As a professional player you always prepare for your season before you come back for training, you always do something before and I think everyone was doing their jobs at home,” states Bruno. “I’m happy to see how everyone is, how happy they are to be back and they are training really hard.”
Quizzed on Donny bulking up, Fernandes continues: “Yes he’s working hard and working hard in the gym. Obviously he is one of the quality players we know and now he’s building up.”
TEAM SPIRIT IS STRONG
Van de Beek made his first appearance of the pre-season campaign during our recent 2-2 draw against Brentford at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman was proud to wear the captain's armband in the closing stages and that didn't escape the attention of the watching Harry Maguire.
Responding to an Instagram photo of Donny as skipper, our club captain appeared to reference his team-mate's new bulk by writing: "Don't stretch that armband @Donnyvdbeek!"
In case you didn’t know, United are busy preparing for Saturday’s final pre-season friendly against Everton at Old Trafford and van de Beek is presumably set to be involved against the Toffees.
The 12:45 BST kick-off will be broadcast live on MUTV and coverage starts at 11:45.
