Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes injury update

Wednesday 26 April 2023 12:30

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag says Bruno Fernandes is a doubt for the Premier League trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.

Our no.8 played 101 minutes of Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup semi-final victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, but looked uncomfortable at times after turning his ankle awkwardly during the first half of the game.

Fernandes played on and was a vital cog in United's midfield, but was eventually replaced by Wout Weghorst in extra time and missed the nerve-wracking penalty shootout, which United won 7-6 after Solly March's miss during sudden death.

Ten Hag isn’t yet sure whether Bruno will be able to feature when we face the north Londoners, in what is a crucial fixture in the race for top four.

United are fourth in the table, six points ahead of Spurs, with two games in hand, and we could effectively knock the capital club out of contention with victory.

“There are some unavailable. [Lisandro] Martinez, [Raphael] Varane. We have to see how Bruno Fernandes is,” Ten Hag told reporters when asked for an update on his team.

“We don't know yet, he is a question mark. I think for the rest, we are quite okay.”

Supporters were concerned when a picture of the midfielder recovering at home appeared to show him requiring a protective boot and crutches.

However, Ten Hag suggested this didn't necessarily rule Fernandes out of the journey south, although time was tight to allow the swelling to reduce.

"It's more often [than not] that players [wear the boot], that we protect them,” he added. "Prevention.

“But it [the ankle] has to settle down so we all have seen he played the full [90-minute] game and it happened in the first half.

“But [the game is] Thursday, so tomorrow is quick but we have to see what is possible.”

If Bruno Fernandes can’t be involved against Spurs, who do you think will play in the no.10 position instead?

Bruno was suspended for the Europa League defeat at Sevilla, and has missed other games due to bans and being rested, but the only match he has been otherwise unavailable for since joining the club in early 2020 was, ironically enough, the 3-2 win against Tottenham in March 2022.

Fernandes was ill that day, when his fellow countryman Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick.
