How Bruno has approached the 300 club so quickly

Bruno Fernandes has theorised on the reasons behind his incredible availability, ahead of making his 300th Manchester United appearance.

The club captain is set to enter our prestigious ‘300 club’ against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday, less than six years after joining the Reds from Sporting in January 2020.

Our no.8 has averaged 54 appearances across five full seasons at United and, if he can maintain that, he will enter the club’s top 50 appearance-makers this term.

In our interview at Carrington, Bruno began by reflecting on his latest milestone. “I am very proud, it is a privilege, an honour,” he told MUTV’s Mark Sullivan.

“This is far, far from everything I have dreamed about, you know. I just wanted to play football when I was a kid and now getting into this club, having the chance to play 300 times for this club, it is something I am very grateful for.”

THE 300 CLUB | Bruno Fernandes is set to make his 300th United appearance and he’s excited to make many, many more…

Asked for the secrets behind his remarkable availability, our Portuguese magnifico pointed to three things: his appreciation of a power nap, his lifelong love for football and a meticulous personal routine.

“I don't know, probably my nap!” replied Bruno, with a smile. “I don't know, I have always said it is something my parents probably gave to me. Through them, my love for football, the way I always want to be available, I always want to play football, I always want to be involved.

“As a kid, I used to play football and my mum used to say I played football 24/7. I am no different, that kid is still inside of me, that dream is still inside of me, I am eager to play football and to always be with a ball by my side and by my feet. It is always there, so it might be that.”
Diogo Dalot often talks about his “obsession” with availability and Bruno admits he has a similar mindset, but with a different approach – which can be a key lesson for other players.

"Obviously, we have different routines but we always speak a lot, me and Diogo,” explained Fernandes. “We say it with many players when we speak about this, you have to find out what is good for you, not whatever I am doing or what he is doing.

“Because everyone is different, every person has a different way of resting, recovering and everything. You just have to find the right things that make you be available for everything.

“How much you go to the gym, how much you need to do core, how much you need to do strength, you don't need to do everything at the max but you need to do everything at the right moment and in the right way to get the best of you.”

Bruno has collected a room full of memorabilia from his 299 appearances so far and he intends to add more winners’ medals in the future.

“I think we are growing and obviously, as a club, we want to get close to that [more trophies]. We want to do it now, we want to do it tomorrow, but we know we are on the patch where we have to go game by game.

“I think it is the most important thing for us as a group of players now, to understand that if we don't win the next game, we won't be closer to what we want to achieve. In the right moments, we need to win and then the big moments will come for us.”
