Fernandes breaks penalty record

Saturday 09 March 2024 14:43

Bruno Fernandes kept his cool to open the scoring from the spot against Everton, setting Manchester United on course for a 2-0 victory.

Although the captain allowed Marcus Rashford to take over duties from 12 yards later in the half, with the England striker also beating Jordan Pickford, he has now scored more penalties for the club than any other player in our history.

The no.8 has been consistently reliable in these situations and earned the adulation of the home crowd when leaving the pitch, as did Alejandro Garnacho, who was fouled for both incidents, punished by referee Simon Hooper.

The stat refers to all competitions and does not include goals in shootouts.

Bruno's strike against the Toffees was his 29th from the spot, overtaking deadly Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy. This was Fernandes's 222nd appearance for the club, while Ruud took 219 to achieve his mark.

Wayne Rooney, who attended Saturday's game between his former clubs as a TV pundit, is in third place, one behind van Nistelrooy.
