Bruno Fernandes

Which United goal would Bruno show to his son?

Wednesday 08 February 2023 12:00

Bruno Fernandes has selected a standout moment from his three years with Manchester United so far.

The Portugal international recently conducted an in-depth interview with club media to celebrate his signing anniversary – he joined us on 30 January 2020 – and during this, he discussed reaching 100 goal involvements for United and booking a place in the Carabao Cup final later this month.

When we asked our no.8 how he reflects on his time at Old Trafford, he mentioned that young son Goncalo had been asking to see some of his dad’s best goals – and he’s certainly spoiled for choice as the senior Fernandes has notched 57 to date, with that number going up all the time.

So, if Bruno had to pick one video to show his son, of any particular goal or game, which one would it be?

“My standout moment is probably the hat-trick against Leeds,” began Bruno, fittingly picking out a game against our upcoming home-and-away opponents.

“That was a really good moment, on the opening day of the Premier League for us in that [2021/22] season.

“It was an amazing atmosphere, with the first time back as a full stadium. It was amazing the atmosphere there and I think that was a pretty good moment for me.

“I have some [other] goals I would like to show my son. I like the one against Newcastle at home [in September 2021’s 4-1 win], outside of the box: I think that was a pretty good goal.

“I have many others that I like. I could show him the many penalties I have scored too.

“I could show him any goal because I don’t think he understands what is a good goal or a bad goal yet!”

Bruno admitted that young Goncalo is probably more interested in how he celebrates his goals than how he scores them. Fernandes’s familiar knee-slide with hands over his ears is a family favourite, inspired by a conversation with his daughter Matilde.

“I think he just enjoys seeing me celebrate because he loves to go around the house when he’s playing with me, faking that he’s scored a goal. He goes on his knees, sliding and doing the celebration that I used to do.

“I’m really happy to see that because when you are a father sometimes it’s something [like that] which pushes you a little bit more.

“Your kids enjoy seeing you playing well and winning games and that raises me to win games because they can go out of the house when I win. When I lose, I’m not in the mood and we have to stay home [smiles].”
