Fernandes: We kept doing the right things

Monday 21 February 2022 07:00

Bruno Fernandes was impressed with the composure of his team-mates during Manchester United’s 4-2 win over Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday.

The Reds initially led through goals from Harry Maguire and Fernandes himself but were pegged back early in the second half by the hosts, with Rodrigo and Raphinha scoring within a minute of one another.

But United rallied once more, and late goals from substitutes Fred and Anthony Elanga ensured that Ralf Rangnick’s side took all three points back to Manchester.

Fernandes, who also assisted Elanga's goal, said: “We [kept] on doing the right things, making the right decisions.

“You have to keep doing the right things and taking the right decisions, even if you go down.”

Bruno spoke to us in the lead-up to the game, saying he was expecting a hostile reception and that prediction came true: “[It was] unbelievable, I really enjoyed it.

“[There was a] great atmosphere, amazing support from our fans and [it was] a great result for us.”

Maguire’s opener was our first goal in the top-flight from a corner since April 2021, and Fernandes was pleased to end that barren run.

“It’s good to see. We are improving on that,” he said.

“[If we] keep on doing the right things, we will score more goals from set-pieces. The main point is scoring goals. If it is from set-pieces or whatever it is, we have to score.”

At the beginning of the second half, Leeds levelled the scores when Raphinha capped off a move that appeared to begin with a potential foul on Fernandes and the Portuguese believes Paul Tierney should have blown his whistle.

“I think it was a foul because when I passed the ball he stamped on my foot,” he said. “[But] I don’t see if he touches the ball when I did the pass.

“It’s English football so I have to get used to it.”

With the scores level, Fred was introduced by Rangnick and made the difference when he scored to make it 3-2, while Elanga added the fourth.

Fernandes was keen to point out the contributions of both players, as well as Scott McTominay who fought hard in midfield in dreadful weather conditions.

“Fred is a player that works very hard and doesn’t get a lot of praise,” Fernandes said. “Him and Scott are two players who are really important for us in many games.

“I’m really happy for him and also for Anthony [Elanga], who got his goal. He’s a kid that deserves that.”
