Bruno: It's something that has to make you proud

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes insists that wearing the armband for the Reds is something he has always held in the highest of regards.

The club officially announced earlier this week that our Portuguese midfielder will take over the role of captain for the start of our upcoming season.

Having taken on the role as a skipper for large parts of our 2022/23 campaign, Bruno spoke to club media recently about the first time he was asked to lead the team out.

Handed the responsibility by former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Fernandes admits it's something he will also hold dear to him as a United player.

Bruno Fernandes feels great pride in taking on the club captaincy at United...

"Obviously, it's a great honour," began our no.8. "The first time [I wore the captain's armband] was in the Champions League against PSG. I was getting a little bit surprised by Ole but obviously I said to him at the time it's just such an honour for me.

"I still have the armband and the shirt from that game because I wanted to keep it for me, because this is something that is not for everyone.

"And it's something that has to make you proud, has to make you understand that you are in a place where everyone would like to be: playing for Man United. Having the chance to have the armband and having that responsibility is such a big honour."
Erik ten Hag's men are still set to play another six pre-season games before our 2023/24 Premier League opener against Wolves, with our next outing coming against Arsenal on Saturday - you can watch all the action live on MUTV.

With plenty of preparations still to come, Bruno admits the Premier League fixture against Wolves Old Trafford is something he can't wait to experience, with the countdown firmly on ahead of our domestic curtain raiser on 14 August.

Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Bruno will lead the team on a permanent basis.

"Yeah, it will be [special], because officially it will be the first time that I'm a club captain for the club," he insisted.

"And obviously I want to keep that one because I want to frame it both together to understand how long the [time between them] was.

"But it was really good to achieve this now because it means a lot for everything that you have done through your career to understand that you made a big thing to be a club captain of one of the biggest clubs in the world."
With the 28-year-old's family also no doubt hoping to be in attendance, Fernandes insists making the ones he holds closest proud is something he cannot wait to experience.

"Yeah, of course they've been in Old Trafford," he said. "They walk with me on the pitch and it's something that they love.

"And who knows, probably on the first day I would love to have them both by my side to walk on the pitch and to make them feel proud."
