Bruno achieves United landmark

Sunday 07 April 2024 17:56

Bruno Fernandes's long-range equaliser for Manchester United against Liverpool on Sunday provided a special moment in more ways than one.

Erik ten Hag's side had been distinctly second-best during the first half at Old Trafford and we went into the interval trailing to Luis Diaz's goal, without having had an attempt ourselves, aside from Alejandro Garnacho's disallowed effort.

The Merseysiders quickly looked to re-establish their dominance following the restart, but it took just one misjudged pass from Jarell Quansah for our captain to pounce and restore belief around the Theatre of Dreams.

Fernandes was within the centre-circle when he ran on to the loose ball, but only needed a moment to size up the opportunity and caress it over the grasping Caoimhin Kelleher and into the net.

It was Bruno's 10th goal of the season and it also brought up a United landmark for the skipper.

Our no.8's guided finish brought up goal no.50 for him in the Premier League, just over four years after he moved here from Sporting Club in Lisbon.

It's taken 154 games for Fernandes to achieve the feat, with the ever-reliable midfielder only actually missing five fixtures since joining, all through suspension or illness.

Bruno has become just the 12th Red to reach the half-century since the league was rebranded in 1992, with team-mates Marcus Rashford (83) and Anthony Martial (63) also members of the 50-up club.

Wayne Rooney is way out in front, scoring 183 times for United in his 13-year spell, while Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo also managed three figures.

Fernandes is just the fourth midfielder to make the milestone, as David Beckham (62 goals in 265 games) did it too.

Bruno is now in double figures for goals for the fifth straight season as a Red, having scored 12, 28, 10 and 14 times during his four full campaigns before this one.

His next goal will be his 75th for United.
