Bruno clear on his United ambitions

Friday 21 January 2022 09:00

Bruno Fernandes has spelled out his Manchester United ambitions again and has no time for those who feel the Reds are not capable of lifting a trophy this season.

The Reds have a fourth-round tie with Middlesbrough in the Emirates FA Cup to look forward to in early February before travelling to Spain for the first leg of our Champions League round-of-16 meeting with Atletico Madrid later in the month.

And Bruno is convinced silverware is still in United's reach, if we can show the intensity required to go all the way in the two competitions.

Bruno Fernandes outlines his burning desire to succeed with Manchester United...

The Portugal international provided an extensive interview with United Review, the official matchday programme for Saturday's visit of West Ham United to Old Trafford.

During the exclusive chat, he was keen to point out that he will never stop fighting for team honours while wearing the famous red jersey, although it is always a boost for confidence to win individual prizes, such as last term's Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.

"Of course, I think it’s always important to win individual trophies," he told United Review. "As a player, you always want to win the team trophies, the ones that count really, but obviously individual ones, for us, it’s really important to have these kind of trophies to lift you up.

"It gives you confidence, to keep working hard, keep fighting and understand much more will surely come to you. You have to keep your way, the best way you can. I think, if you get that kind of credit, you have to know that the expectations on you will be higher and higher every day.”

When asked what his ambitions are after nearly two years at Old Trafford, Fernandes was unequivocal in his response. Still hurting from the pain of losing the Europa League final to Villarreal, after an agonising penalty shoot-out last year, he remains fiercely determined to get his hands on a trophy because he feels that is what everybody at the club not only craves but deserves.

"My ambition is still the same," he asserted. "I want to win trophies with the club. That will always be in my mind until the last day I am at the club. I don’t know when that will be but, until then, I will believe that I can win trophies with this club because I think we can and I think the club deserves it, the fans deserve it and also the players, we deserve to win a trophy.

"Whenever that is, we have to do it step by step and understand we have those qualities but we have to understand how to do it, how to put everything together – the qualities and the intensity and everything.”

There is still much to play for in 2021/22 in this respect, with the Reds competing for silverware at home and abroad and looking to improve on our Premier League position.

“Of course," explained Bruno. "In the league it is too far now. We have to be realistic and we have to fight for the top four and being in the Champions League next season.

“At the same time, fight for the Champions League and the FA Cup. I don’t care what people think or can say about us winning the Champions League or the FA Cup. I think we have the chance to win it, the qualities to win it and, most of all, we are in those competitions. Until we are out, we have to believe we can win those competitions.”
