Why Bruno will miss the quarter-final

Thursday 22 December 2022 11:07

Bruno Fernandes will miss Manchester United's Carabao Cup quarter-final in the new year.

The Portugal midfielder captained the team to a 2-0 triumph over Burnley on Wednesday night and was instrumental in the build-up to the opening goal by Christian Eriksen, delivering a great pass to Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

It was an impressive performance, overall, by our no.8 in his first outing since starring at the World Cup finals for his country in Qatar.

However, Fernandes picked up a yellow card in the 89th minute, for a foul on Connor Roberts, which is his second in the competition, after he was also cautioned during the 4-2 victory over Aston Villa last month.

Since the 2019/20 campaign, domestic bookings only count for that specific competition. If a player receives a caution in consecutive games in the Carabao Cup, they miss the next tie. All yellow cards accumulated are erased after the quarter-final stage and nobody will be unavailable for a final due to accumulating bookings.

Bruno, who famously hates missing matches, will be sidelined for our last-eight game in the week commencing 9 January 2023. He has already had a Premier League ban this term, ensuring he sat out the defeat at Aston Villa on 6 November.

We will discover our opponents when the draw takes place on Thursday night, after Manchester City's contest with Liverpool is concluded.
