Fernandes wins Fans' Player of the Month award

Monday 09 March 2020 13:30

Bruno Fernandes has claimed the PFA Bristol Street Motors Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month award for February, after a stellar first month in the English top-flight.

The January signing from Sporting Lisbon picked up 58 per cent of the public vote, placing him well clear of his fellow countryman, Wolves’ goalkeeper Rui Patricio, who came second with 19 per cent.

It’s the second prize that Bruno has won in just over a week, after the attacking midfielder took home the club’s official Player of the Month award, too.

The 25-year-old is also in the running for the Premier League’s gong, which will be announced on Friday 13 March.

A FANTASTIC FEBRUARY

Bruno's Premier League career got off to a promising start, as he pulled the strings and looked the liveliest player on the pitch in United’s closely-fought 0-0 draw with Wolves on 1 February.

The Reds stormed back into action after the winter break, by defeating Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on 17 February – and the Portuguese was right at the heart of the action. His delightful cross was perfectly measured for Harry Maguire, who nodded home our second and clinching goal.

Six days later, Old Trafford saw its new crowd favourite score his first goal for the club with a coolly-taken penalty to give us the lead against Watford. He later provided an assist for Mason Greenwood’s thumping strike, as we saw off the Hornets 3-0.

Harry Maguire finished third in the poll with eight per cent of nominations, ahead of Dwight McNeil (Burnley), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal) and Richarlison (Everton), after the Reds also kept three consecutive Premier League clean sheets in February.

Congratulations on your award, Bruno!

PRAISE FROM TWO UNITED LEGENDS

Fernandes produced another influential performance on Sunday by providing a world-class assist for Anthony Martial's goal, in United's 2-0 victory over local rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Speaking after the match on Sky Sports, Treble winner Gary Neville discussed the affect that our new no.18 has made on the club so far.

"Bruno has made an impact beyond what anybody could have expected," explained Neville. "It is not just in possession as well to be fair, but out of possession as well in the way that he sprints forward, gets to people and looks hungry. He looks like he is rubbing off on everybody."

Roy Keane, sat beside Neville in the Sky Sports studio, also heaped praise on Fernandes and admitted his capture deserves plenty of credit.

"We all know it is difficult to bring in top players in January, of course, so it has worked out brilliantly," said Keane. "He has lifted everyone at the club, from the players to the crowd. It is like he has been here for 20 years. He has got pure quality. We keep saying that managers need time and the big plus for Ole over the last year or so, is that the recruitment seems to be getting better and if you recruit good players then it gives you a chance. I'm delighted for Ole."
