Fernandes: We need to do better

Saturday 26 February 2022 19:49

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has reflected on the Reds' 0-0 draw with Watford at Old Trafford.

United were dominant throughout large parts of proceedings in the Premier League clash, with our no.18 coming closest to opening the scoring in the first half, forcing a smart save from Ben Foster.

Cristiano Ronaldo hit the post just prior, while Jadon Sancho crafted out the Reds' best opportunity during the second half, but the Reds unfortunately had to settle for a point at full-time.

Bruno: It is a disappointing result

Bruno Fernandes reacts after United were held 0-0 by Watford...

"We had good chances, big chances to score,’’ began our captain for the day, as he spoke to club media following Saturday afternoon's stalemate.

"Myself I think I had two big chances to score a goal. But in the end, it turned into one of those days where we could of been here for another hour and still not score.

"If we look at the performance you can say it was good, but not good enough because we didn't score goals.

‘’Now is the moment to look forward to the next game and understand the next one [against Manchester City] will be massive for us, for our fans and for what we want to do in the league too.''

With the Reds unfortunately failing to make our early pressure count, the Hornets defended resolutely during a second 45 minutes in which Ralf Rangnick's men pushed continuously for a winner, but to no reward.

''We are really disappointed with the result. I think the team performed well enough to get another result,’’ added Bruno.

"Obviously we had many chances to score but it was one of those days were you could try many times and the ball was not going in.

"We have to look straight away to the next game, understand what we can do better, what didn't work today to then do it better in the next one."

Despite having 67 per cent of the possession across the 90 minutes in M16, the Reds couldn’t find the vital spark in the final third, with Bruno himself registering United’s final attempt on target in the closing stages.

Our no.18 attempted to dictate play from a slightly deeper area in the closing stages, upon the introduction of further attacking players from the home bench, allowing Fernandes and co to be more direct in possession, in search of a go-ahead goal.

''You start to try and push a little bit more forward, try different things, trying to put balls in the box.

"We had more boys in the box in the last 15 minutes so we tried to put the ball in there.

"It didn't work and Watford defended really well so we have to say that also. It was just one of those days.''
