Wednesday 24 August 2022 11:41

Erik ten Hag will find out the opposition for his first domestic cup tie as Manchester United manager on Wednesday night.

The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup will take place live on Sky Sports, following the conclusion of the tie between Tranmere Rovers and Newcastle United.

This is the stage when the Premier League sides involved in Europe enter the competition as the road to Wembley continues.

The actual date of the upcoming encounter has been hugely delayed, due to the season being restructured to facilitate a winter World Cup.

The 16 matches will not take place until 8/9 November, which is the midweek before the Premier League finishes in advance of the tournament in Qatar.

United last lifted the trophy in 2017, when beating Saturday's opponents Southampton 3-2, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice.

It was a fifth League Cup triumph for the Reds with Liverpool the current holders after a penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea earlier this year.

With the final due to be held on 26 February 2023, it is the first chance for silverware for all clubs this term.

The match data confirms that Erik ten Hag's team outfought and outran Jurgen Klopp's side.

Although there are four more matches being played on Wednesday, with the others being Forest Green Rovers v Brighton & Hove Albion, Leeds United v Barnsley and Wycombe Wanderers v Bristol City, we do know the teams who will also be in the draw.

Premier League side Fulham were knocked out by Crawley Town but the other top-flight clubs progressed, although Leicester City (Stockport County) and Bournemouth (Norwich City) had to squeeze through on penalties.
