Casemiro shares the credit for goalscoring form

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro is determined to help the team by scoring even more goals this season, after netting four times during the campaign so far.

The Brazil international opened his account for 2023/24 by concluding an excellent team move against Nottingham Forest, which was later voted our Goal of the Month for August.

Our no.18 struck twice in the Champions League match against Bayern Munich, and added a fourth in the Carabao Cup third-round win over Crystal Palace.

The League Cup is United’s focus this midweek as Newcastle visit Old Trafford in the fourth round, with a place in the competition’s quarter-finals up for grabs.

In an interview for Wednesday’s edition of United Review, conducted last week, Casemiro is asked how hard he is working to score goals this season and particularly from set-pieces.
“There’s no doubt that this is something we’ve been working on a lot,” said the 31-year-old. “Eric Ramsay [first-team coach] works hard on dead-ball situations, and he’s at the club for this very reason. He deserves credit for the work he’s done, indicating to us where we can hurt them the most. I think that the coaching staff have played a big role in this regard.

“Of course, those stats you mentioned are important [four goals in 11 games], especially for me given that I’m a defensive midfielder, but anything I can contribute to the team is really important to me. I’m always trying to help out. Obviously, my main aim isn’t to score.

“I have other duties. However, if I can chip in with goals from set-pieces and contribute to the team in this way then that counts for a lot. The credit shouldn’t just be given to the players and the specific player who scores, but the coaching staff as well.”
Casemiro's most important United goal so far is the opener in last season’s Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle. Marcus Rashford went on to double our advantage and contribute to a 2-0 win at Wembley Stadium.

Casemiro says Wednesday's fourth-round match is another exciting occasion for our fans. “It’s set to be a great game because, as you said, it was the final last season and it could be the final this time around as well,” he told United Review

“It’ll be a really tough game but one we’ll relish playing in. I think that it’ll be a match settled on small details – the team that makes the fewest mistakes will win. We know that it’s a game worthy of a final and it’s like playing in a final early in the season.

“We’ve got to really go for it in the game and be really focused. It’ll be a great game for both teams. We’re really excited for this game because Manchester United v Newcastle United is a huge fixture, and this time around it’ll be no different.”
