Casey Stoney

Stoney nominated for top award

Tuesday 27 April 2021 10:00

Manchester United Women’s head coach Casey Stoney is one of five nominees for the Barclays Manager of the Season award.

The Reds boss has been recognised for guiding her side to a strong second season in the Women’s Super League, with United unbeaten in our first 10 matches and leading the table until mid-January.

That early form saw Stoney win Barclays Manager of the Month for November and December and, although Chelsea and Manchester City have pulled away at the top in recent weeks, United are still in contention for the third and final UEFA Women’s Champions League spot.

The Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 at the weekend and, with games against Bristol City and Everton to come, we are currently level on 41 points with 2019 champions Arsenal, although the Gunners do have a game in hand and hold a healthy goal-difference advantage.

Even if we don’t manage to overtake Joe Montemurro’s side in the next fortnight, a place in the top four is guaranteed for the second term in succession following promotion from the Championship two years ago.

WHO ELSE HAS BEEN NOMINATED?

Casey is up against four other names for the accolade, including Chelsea’s Emma Hayes – last season’s winner – and Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor.

Hope Powell, whose Brighton & Hove Albion side beat United earlier this month, is also nominated, as is Carla Ward of 10th-placed Birmingham City.
