Eriksen: Late goal shows our character

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen explains that the Reds’ late goal at Chelsea is telling of the character and spirit in the squad.

United were in control for large parts of the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge but it was looking like we would end up rueing miss chances at full-time, especially when Jorginho gave the hosts an 87th-minute lead from the penalty spot.

But the Reds kept fighting for a way through, and got it, in stoppage time, through an impressive Casemiro header, to earn a point.

Christian celebrated from the dugout, having been substituted in the closing stages, before joining MUTV to reflect on a dramatic finish in the capital.

Christian was delighted with our response to going behind, and had special praise for Casemiro's neck!

“It does feel like a big relief compared to the six minutes before with the penalty against, it was a big blow,” the Denmark international told us.

“But, obviously, it shows the character and what a nice header.

“It was [a cracking header] – a very strong neck! [Smiles] A very strong neck to get the ball over there, a very nice goal,” he added.
The late equaliser of course sparked scenes of jubilation for the Reds and our travelling supporters, who were able to celebrate together, with the goal coming at the end that our fans were situated.

“I think that’s what the fans want to go to the stadium for, that’s what we as players want to achieve," said Christian.

“We want to entertain and score goals and celebrate with the fans. Like you said, it was perfect timing to score at that end, to celebrate with the fans.”

Eriksen did acknowledge that the Reds could have made life simpler, and possibly even won the game, had we capitalised on a particularly strong showing in the first half of the match.

“Most the first half, I think we played very well.

“We created chances and really were more dominant than they were. So yeah, I do think we should have made it easier for ourselves in the first half with a goal or two.”

The Reds pick up a hard-fought point after a dramatic finish at Stamford Bridge.

Although it hasn’t been a perfect week by any means results-wise, Christian believes that United can take a lot from our three matches over the last seven days.

The Reds produced a commanding performance in the midweek win over Tottenham, with draws with Newcastle and now Chelsea either side, and that’s something that suggests we’re moving in the right direction under Erik ten Hag, according to our no.14.

“We always aim to be better than what we have if we don’t have nine points, but I think overall, we can be proud of what we achieved," he explained.

“Wednesday was a big performance and to top it up today would have been perfect, but we are on the right path to something that’s going to be a lot more fun than where we are.”
