Ten Hag: Eriksen return 'very useful'

Friday 22 December 2023 16:58

Erik ten Hag has declared Christian Eriksen's return to first-team availability as 'very useful', ahead of Saturday's Premier League away game at West Ham United.

The Dane has been absent for almost six weeks due to a knee injury, but is expected to be part of the matchday squad for the upcoming match at London Stadium on Saturday (12:30 GMT).

His recovery is a welcome boost for United's midfield, which has also been without the influential Casemiro since early November's Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United.

Mason Mount has endured injury issues since joining in the summer too, leaving Ten Hag with limited options for tough games like last Sunday's trip to Anfield, where 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo and the on-loan Sofyan Amrabat fought manfully against a confident Liverpool team.

The boss gives a detailed update on his squad ahead of Saturday's game in the capital.

Speaking to club media ahead of Saturday's lunchtime meeting with the Hammers, Erik's delight at Christian's return was palpable.

"We have some returns that are very useful," began the manager, when asked to provide the latest team news.

"The one we are pleased to have is the return of Christian Eriksen in the squad. We also have doubts; we had some illness in the week, so we will have to see how they recover tomorrow.

"But one thing is sure, we will put a good line-up on the pitch and we have to win the game."
Eriksen is, of course, a vastly experienced international, admired for his clean, technical passing and unflappable composure.

And while Mainoo has impressed hugely during his first two Premier League starts, Ten Hag will be delighted that he has a more senior option, in addition to the youngster, plus the fact skipper Bruno Fernandes is back from a one-game ban.

Eriksen has played 59 times for United since joining on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, scoring three times. He was named the club's Player of the Month for September 2022.
