The player at the centre of our latest collectible design for the Champions League encounter is Kobbie Mainoo, following the young midfielder’s rise to our first team.
The 18-year-old Academy graduate made his senior debut last season but it’s in 2023/24 that he’s really started to make an impact and play his way into Erik ten Hag’s thinking.
He missed the early part of the campaign with an injury sustained in pre-season but was handed his first Premier League start in last month’s win at Everton and impressed in a midfield two alongside Scott McTominay, earning him our Man of the Match award.
Mainoo has since made substitute appearances against Galatasaray and Newcastle United, with Ten Hag asserting that he needs to manage the teenager’s workload.
“He showed he was ready," said the Dutchman after the 3-0 victory at Goodison Park. "We have many options but we have to manage the load of the players. It is also about freshness as well.”
When asked what Mainoo brings to his midfield, Erik said: "His scanning. It always looks like he has time.
"Because of his scanning, he is running free and then scanning to see the options and then make the right decisions. He can delay, he can speed up and he makes the right decisions.''
