Revealed: Sancho's official United squad number

Friday 23 July 2021 15:30

Manchester United can confirm that new signing Jadon Sancho will wear the no.25 shirt, after joining the club on a five-year deal.

The 21-year-old completed his move from Borussia Dortmund earlier today and will be with the Reds until June 2026, with the option for a further year.

And after endless speculation as to which United squad number the England international might acquire, we can finally reveal that 25 will be his.

The last wearer of Sancho's new shirt was Odion Ighalo, who enjoyed a loan spell with the club between 2020-21.

But perhaps the jersey is most frequently associated with our former Ecuadorian stalwart Antonio Valencia, who wore it for all but two of his 10 seasons in M16.
Sancho has the opportunity to enshrine no.25 as his number – perhaps in the same way Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is forever associated with no.20, and Paul Scholes with no.18.

The South Londoner will become the 10th Red to wear it since the Premier League introduced squad numbers at the start of the 1993/94 campaign, following Ighalo, Valencia, Nick Powell, Danny Simpson, David Jones, Quinton Fortune, Jordi Cruyff, Kevin Pilkington and Gary Walsh.

“This is my club, this is where I belong,” says our new recruit, following the confirmation of his transfer...

Sancho could get the chance to wear his new jersey for the first time at Old Trafford in our opening Premier League game of the season against Leeds United on 14 August (kick-off 12:30 BST).

“I’m excited for the new season, especially as the first game is at home,” says our new signing. “That’s always a confidence booster – to be in front of your own fans – so it will be nice.

“I can’t wait to get started and obviously want to bring trophies to where they belong. I can’t wait to get started – see you soon.”
