Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Newcastle v United: How the Reds line up

Sunday 06 October 2019 15:30

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed his starting XI to face Newcastle United at St James’ Park this afternoon.

Axel Tuanzebe starts alongside Harry Maguire in the centre of defence and replaces the injured Victor Lindelof in one of six changes Solskjaer has made to the Reds’ XI which was held to a goalless draw by AZ Alkmaar on Thursday. Ole confirmed in his pre-match interview that Lindelof had injured his back in the Netherlands and will need a week of rest.

As he did in the Hague, David De Gea starts in goal. Diogo Dalot retains his slot at right-back - and makes his first Premier League start of the campaign, while our captain for today, Ashley Young, replaces Brandon Williams on the left.

Maguire has been brought in for Marcos Rojo after being an unused substitute in the Netherlands.

Axel Tuanzebe replaces Victor Lindelof at the heart of the Reds' defence.

Scott McTominay – the winner of our September Player of the Month award and Goal of the Month prize after his spectacular effort against the Gunners - joins Fred in central midfield, with Nemanja Matic starting on the bench, while Andreas Pereira plays alongside Juan Mata and Daniel James in attack.

Marcus Rashford, who scored our second in a 2-0 win on our last visit to this ground in January, has been given the nod up front in place of Mason Greenwood.

The 18-year-old joins fellow Academy graduates Williams, Gomes and Chong on the bench, alongside Sergio Romero, Rojo and Matic.

The Reds line up as follows...

United: De Gea; Dalot, Tuanzebe, Maguire, Young (c); Fred, McTominay; Andreas, Mata, James; Rashford.

Subs: Romero, Rojo, Williams, Matic, Gomes, Chong, Greenwood.

Meanwhile, this is the home side selected by Steve Bruce:
