Confirmed: Mazraoui takes United no.3 shirt
Noussair Mazraoui’s Manchester United shirt number has been confirmed, following his move from Bayern Munich.
The Morocco international joined the Reds on Tuesday, in a deal subject to registration that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2028, with the option of an extra year.
The former Ajax and Bayern full-back will sport the no.3 for his new side, which has been a famous figure for United down the years.
As the traditional number for left-backs in England, the likes of Tony Dunne and Arthur Albiston were long-time wearers, while Denis Irwin was the first player to be listed at no.3 when the Premier League mandated squad numbers from the 1993/94 season onwards.
The Republic of Ireland international kept the shirt until his departure for Wolves in 2002 and then it was passed to Phil Neville.
Patrice Evra took the number when joining from Monaco, six months after Neville had left for Everton, and the Frenchman wore it for all 379 of his Reds appearances.
Luke Shaw, our current no.23, was initially no.3 in his debut season, while Eric Bailly was the last incumbent prior to Mazraoui.
Noussair sported no.40 during his two-season stay with Bayern, where he won the Bundesliga in 2023.
That number obviously has a special meaning, as it was what he wore on debut for Ajax during the 2017/18 season.
However, he eventually switched to no.12 for the Amsterdam club.
