Ronaldo makes request to the fans

Cristiano Ronaldo has credited the reaction of the supporters inside Old Trafford for getting Manchester United over the line against Villarreal.

Our No.7 bagged a 95th-minute strike to secure a 2-1 success, with what was the latest winning goal for the Reds in Champions League history – surpassing the previous record set by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in our iconic 1999 final victory.

The noise from the crowd inside the Theatre of Dreams ramped up a notch after Alex Telles’s stunning leveller, something which Ronaldo says inspired the team to get all three points.

Speaking to MUTV's Stewart Gardner, Cristiano admitted: “Sometimes the players, we try to do our job, to play good and score goals but sometimes it is not possible.

“The fans have this role as well when the team is in a difficult moment, they need to push us. This is why I say and ask them if they can do that.

“They give us motivation to keep going and to keep running and keep believing. So, today, this is what we felt. We are so happy. A very important win and we are in a good way now.”

On the night where the Portuguese forward became the outright record holder for the number of appearances in the Champions League, it was perhaps fitting the already record goalscorer should grab the headlines.

He added: “Unbelievable! Another chapter, another beautiful chapter, so I’m so happy to score the winning goal and the way I did it.

“The most appearances in history and to score a goal. A great night. I have to mention the attitude of the team which is the most important [thing] here."
