Why Fletcher is always keen to help
Interim head coach Darren Fletcher believes it’s always important to give something back to Manchester United, the club that he spent 20 years with as a player.
Fletcher will take charge of the Reds at Burnley on Wednesday evening, following Ruben Amorim’s departure on Monday.
He will be assisted in the dugout by Under-21s staff members Travis Binnion and Alan Wright, plus former team-mate Jonny Evans.
It’s the latest in a number of roles the former Scotland international has fulfilled since returning as a coach five years ago.
When asked why he is always keen to put himself forward and help out, Fletcher’s response touched upon how he'd been moulded as a player and a person by United.
Fletcher: United has moulded me
EXCLUSIVE | Interim boss Darren Fletcher details the pride he will feel leading United at Turf Moor on Wednesday...
“It’s just the fact that much [help] has been given to me, and I think you can reflect on that when you finish playing as well,” Fletcher told MUTV.
“I think, when you’re playing, you’re caught in the bubble of competing and all the different things around it.
“You understand the privilege you have of playing for the club, but when you retire and you step away from it, you think that club has moulded me as a 15-year-old boy, being in Manchester.
“Everything I know, how I am as a person, has been moulded by Manchester United and the honour and the privilege of playing for the club for all those years and everything the club gave to me – in challenging times sometimes, in my career – I just look back and think Manchester United has been amazing to me.
“It’s important I give back whenever I can and go above and beyond to help the club.”
