Sunday 01 August 2021 16:15

Manchester United return to competitive action this month in what is set to be an action-packed August.

The Reds will kick off this season’s Premier League campaign at an Old Trafford that should be full for the first time in nearly 18 months, while our Under-23s and Under-18s will also get their respective campaigns under way over the course of the next 31 days.

There are also several cup draws, birthdays and notable anniversaries to come across the next four weeks or so.

Calendars at the ready, here is everything you need to know about August 2021 as a United fan...

Dr John Cooper Clarke introduces our new away kit

Turn your volume up as legendary poet Dr John Cooper Clarke introduces our 2021/22 away kit...

1 August: We kick off the season’s opening month by wishing a very happy 33rd birthday to Reds midfielder Nemanja Matic. If you haven't heard it before, today would be a good day to listen to his insightful episode of UTD Podcast, during which he discussed a range of topics including how he leaked his own transfer to United!

2: It is expected that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have his full first-team squad back at work this week, ahead of our final pre-season outing against Everton. After our friendly with QPR on 24 July, the boss said that our players who reached this summer’s two international finals will join up with the team again “in around 10 days’ time.” So keep an eye out for the likes of Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Fred as we continue to publish exclusive training pics.

5: Speaking of Maguire, Thursday 5 August marks two years since we signed the England centre-back from Leicester City. It also happens to be the birthday of Academy defender Ethan Laird, who'll turn 20.

7: With one week to go until our Premier League opener, we welcome Everton to Old Trafford for our final pre-season test, with the game getting under way at 12:45 BST. All the available seats have now been booked but if you don't have a ticket, you can still watch the game live, on MUTV, and follow updates via ManUtd.com and the Official App.
9: With all of our pre-season games now in the rear-view mirror, it will be all systems go at Carrington ahead of our Premier League opener against Leeds United.

10: We will be sending birthday wishes to our former captain and United legend Roy Keane - many happy returns, Keano!

11: Summer signing Jadon Sancho and prospective new arrival Raphael Varane could be just days away from making their competitive United debuts at Old Trafford. That was just what Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Daniel James were doing exactly two years ago, in a memorable 4-0 win over Chelsea.

12: Today marks a couple of notable anniversaries for our first great team of the 2000s - Ruud van Nistelrooy scored on his United debut in the 2001 Community Shield against Liverpool and two years later, Cristiano Ronaldo signed for the Reds from Sporting Lisbon.

13: The 2021/22 Premier League season gets under way when newly-promoted Brentford host fellow London club Arsenal in a Friday evening kick-off. Earlier in the day, we will hear from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who will be speaking to the media in his pre-match press conference on the eve of our huge home clash with Leeds.

14: The day we have all been waiting some time for. Old Trafford is set to welcome a full house for the first time in nearly 18 months when Leeds visit us for a game that kicks off at 12:30 BST. Our Under-18s will get their league campaign under way half-an-hour earlier, with a Manchester derby at the Academy Stadium.

The Reds overcame the Whites 6-2 in last season's Premier League meeting at Old Trafford.
16: Our Under-23s get the Premier League 2 campaign going with a home game against Leicester City at Leigh Sports Village (19:00 BST). That game, like the vast majority of Academy fixtures this season, will be shown live on MUTV.

17: As the focus shifts to our first away trip of the Premier League campaign at Southampton, we will also be looking back on one of our most memorable league goals scored on the road. 17 August will mark 25 years since David Beckham’s halfway-line strike against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park.

19: Our women’s team will be continuing preparations for the start of the WSL season in September under new head coach Marc Skinner, and in the meantime, we will celebrate a special anniversary - three years since the side's inaugural match against Liverpool - as well as wishing defender Martha Harris a happy birthday.

20: The countdown to our trip to St Mary’s will continue with Ole speaking to the media once again for his pre-match press conference. As always, we will have you covered with live coverage via ManUtd.com, our Official App and MUTV. In the evening, our Under-23s' first away fixture in Premier League 2 takes us to the capital for a clash with Chelsea.

21: Our Under-18s will renew rivalries with Liverpool, as the Merseyside club sends their young team to Carrington for an 11:30 BST kick-off in the U18 Premier League.

17 August 1996 is a day Becks will never forget...and how can you blame him!?
22: It's matchday again as our men's first team make the trip to Southampton in the Premier League for an encounter that gets started at 14:00 BST. You can watch all the pre-match build-up on MUTV while we will have coverage across ManUtd.com and the Official App throughout the day. Oh, and we will potentially have a full away end of travelling Reds for the first time since before the pandemic started!

23: This date marks 15 years since current first-team coach Michael Carrick made his United debut. The midfielder’s 14-minute cameo in a 3-0 win at Charlton Athletic was the first of his 464 appearances for the Reds.

25: Two days later, it is Ole's turn to have a debut anniversary. Like Carrick, the boss also made his bow for us from the bench, coming on to score and rescue a point for us in a 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers in 1996.

26: The start to our European journey this season will become clearer when the group-stage draw for the Champions League takes place in Istanbul, Turkey at 17:00 BST. Want to find out who we could face? Look no further!
Our brand new 2021/22 away kit could be worn for the first time in a competitive game when we visit Southampton.
27: Another Friday means another Ole press conference as the build-up continues to our final game before the September international break, away to Wolves. We’ll have live coverage across ManUtd.com, the Official App and on MUTV, which will also show the Under-23s’ Premier League 2 derby with Manchester City live in the evening (19:00 BST).

28: On Saturday morning, our Under-18s will make the trip across the Pennines to go head-to-head with Leeds at midday in the U18 Premier League. Meanwhile, we'll be using the ten-year anniversary as an excuse to show highlights of our epic 8-2 win over Arsenal back in 2011.

29: Our final game of the month comes in the Premier League when Ole’s Reds visit the Midlands to face Wolves. Kick-off is at 16:30 BST and we will, as always, have full pre-match build-up on MUTV and full coverage across ManUtd.com and the Official App.

30: We will have you covered with all things post-match from Molineux as attentions begin to turn to international football again and the September break. The majority of our players will join up with their respective national sides on this day, ahead of a series of matches in the days to follow.

31: It's transfer deadline day and another iconic date in our history. On this day in 2004, Wayne Rooney signed for the Reds before going on to become our all-time record scorer with 254 goals across a highly-decorated 13 years at the club.
