De Gea gives reaction to defeat

David De Gea admits the message after Manchester United’s defeat to Everton is much the same as it has been throughout the season.

The goalkeeper had little to do in the 1-0 loss at Goodison Park, only beaten when a deflected long-range shot by Anthony Gordon wrong-footed him and nestled into the bottom left corner.

Further up the field, United’s attack was blunt, unable to break down Everton with enough regularity, something De Gea labelled as a cause of the defeat.

“It’s another poor performance, for sure,” he told MUTV.

David De Gea spoke to MUTV reporter Stewart Gardner after the full-time whistle…

“We played against a team who played on Wednesday and we felt from the beginning that they were very nervous and tired, but we are not good enough. We don't create chances, we don't play well and we get beaten by Everton, in probably one of the worst seasons they are having. So it's not acceptable.”

After an even opening 10 minutes, United took control of the game and were building some sustained pressure. Marcus Rashford was twice denied by Jordan Pickford, once from a long-range drive and then from a well-directed header. The goal reversed the flow of the game.

“In the first 20/25 minutes we were controlling the game,” De Gea reflected.

“Like I said, they were very nervous, then they score a lucky goal and it then looks like we've lost the game already. As soon as we concede one goal, that's not the mentality [we should have]. We have to improve a lot, I say always the same things. We are not good enough, that's for sure.

“I don't think we created a proper, proper chance in the whole game. [There were] a couple of chances but not even big ones. I don't know what to say to be honest. It's very sad, I feel sad. This club deserves much more.

“To be honest I didn't see any chance to score for us from the back. I was feeling it was going to finish 1-0 or maybe 2-0 if they had a counterattack, that was my feeling. I didn't make any saves in the second half, I made one in the first and another deflected, but I don't know what to say. It's not good enough.

Our Brazilian midfielder was forced off in the first half and Ralf Rangnick has explained what the problem is.

“I feel horrible. I feel very sad, I can imagine how they [the supporters] feel because they come to every game and we hear them always the whole game, it doesn't matter if we are winning or losing. It's very tough for them and for us.”

Manchester United's next game is at Old Trafford, where Norwich City are the visitors in the Saturday 16 April fixture (15:00 BST).
