De Gea: Everyone enjoys playing for this club

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea believes the team spirit shown in recent weeks is helping drive the Reds on to achieve further success this season.

Our no.1 has so far been in inspired form under Erik ten Hag this term, keeping a whopping 20 clean sheets in all competitions.

David has also played every minute of our 2022/23 Europa League campaign, with preparations now firmly under way ahead of Sevilla's visit to M16 on Thursday evening, as we bid to take one step closer to the semi-finals.

Before the Reds face yet another side from his native Spain this season, David was also quizzed on whether he pays close attention to individual accolades, having recently become the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in United's history.

"Of course, but not only for me, for the team," he began at Wednesday's pre-match press conference at Carrington.

"When we keep a clean sheet it means that the team and I, we did a good job. The criticism is always there and you cannot please everyone. I always try my best to keep the ball out of the net and try to keep clean sheets.

"We have 20 cleans sheets which is the most in Europe or close to the most, I think we are doing a great job together. The most important thing is keeping clean sheets and I'll continue to help the team do it."

When the Reds defeated Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final back in February, De Gea displaced Peter Schmeichel as the club's all-time leading clean sheets holder. He was asked about this achievement prior to our clash with Sevilla, and gave an characteristically humble response.

"It feels great, it means I have been here for a long time and [I am] doing well," he said. "Beating the record of one of the best in the business like Schmeichel it makes me so proud.

"Like you said, now we have to keep even more clean sheets and keep improving, doing even better and when we are keeping clean sheets we are closer to winning big things."

Praising the job manager Ten Hag has done since his arrival at the club, David added how key additions within our squad have helped improve the morale among the United team.

"I think the manager brings the winning mentality," he said. "I think some players as well bring this winning mentality and for sure we are in the right way.

"We are playing really good football, we are winning big games, we have already one cup and I know that is not enough but we are in a really good way and we are all enjoying [it].

"The dressing room is really close together, the players are doing everything and giving 100 per cent in training and in the games. Everyone is enjoying playing for this club and we are still in three competitions this season with lots to play [for] and I think, like I said, we are in the right way."
