De Gea has his say on Player of the Month

Friday 04 March 2022 07:00

David De Gea is happy to see one of his team-mates win the club's official Player of the Month award after winning three of our trophies in succession.

The Spain international was asked for his thoughts on the closest poll for the prize in years, since David's fellow countrymen Juan Mata and Ander Herrera fought for it in November 2016.

Back then, Juan finished only one per cent and 198 votes ahead of Ander and our latest monthly winner is still up in the air with Anthony Elanga and Jadon Sancho virtually neck and neck for February's award.

Who is your Player of the Month for February 2022?

David collected the trophy in November, December and January after a string of fine performances, beating Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Elanga to the latest accolade.

Although he kept clean sheets against Brighton & Hove Albion and Watford recently, he was less involved in February and we have seen Elanga and Sancho pull clear of fellow nominee Raphael Varane in our poll.

"I’m happy for both [of them]," De Gea told us at Carrington. "They are still very, very young. I think they are doing well and helping the team a lot but they are still young people, young players, and we have to be careful to give them some space. They are still very young.

"I don’t know who is going to win. They both deserve it so let the fans decide!"

If you haven't voted yet, please hurry to have your say as the poll closes on Saturday.
