Another award for David!

Friday 04 February 2022 11:00

Congratulations to David De Gea, who has been named the Premier League’s Player of the Month for January 2022.

After 11 years with United and numerous club accolades – including our last three POTM titles – it’s the first time the Spaniard has received league-wide recognition in this way.

De Gea made 22 saves across the Reds’ four league games in January, particularly excelling during the 3-1 win over Brentford as he kept the Bees at bay during a backs-to-the-wall first half.

David also came up with a vital late stop at Old Trafford a fortnight ago to prevent West Ham taking the lead in a game United eventually won and he becomes only the 10th goalkeeper to claim the award since it was first established in 1994.

Congrats to David De Gea, who has beaten Anthony Elanga, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay to the award.

Our no.1 ends a six-year wait in this regard, with Fraser Forster of Southampton the most recent recipient in his position.

David joked that it is well overdue but reiterated that he will always prioritise team trophies over individual prizes.

“Yes, absolutely. I’m very happy to have won the Premier League award too, I’d never won it before,” David told us as part of an exclusive interview, which will be published in the next issue of Inside United.

“I think I’ve been at a consistently high level over a good number of years now and just maybe I could have even won another one before now [laughs]!

“But as I always say, I believe the most important thing is winning silverware. We have to be battling it out for trophies for the club.

“Trying to win things as a team is much bigger than picking up individual awards, but I’m obviously still very happy about it.”

These two minutes show what a huge impact David made for United during January…

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has regularly praised De Gea during his time with the club and believes the win is fully merited.

“Amazing. I mean it’s more than well deserved,” Rangnick said.

“He kept us in quite a few games with fantastic reactions and saves and yeah, as I’ve said, he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“Hopefully, he can keep that kind of level until the end of the season.”

Look out for the full interview with David when the March issue of Inside United drops on 15 February.
