Confirmed: January's Player of the Month

Wednesday 02 February 2022 15:00

The votes are in! And we can reveal that David De Gea has retained his Manchester United Player of the Month crown, after dominating our poll to determine January's outstanding Red.

It means the Spaniard has now claimed the prize across three successive months.

Our no.1 was the clear favourite in our fan vote, gaining 67 per cent of the vote, ahead of Scott McTominay (12 per cent), Bruno Fernandes (11 per cent) and Anthony Elanga (10 per cent).

De Gea made five appearances during the first month of 2022 and kept two clean sheets, which was enough to earn him the nod, despite the impressive efforts of McTominay and co.

Watch David's best saves from five appearances across the month of January…

David was in superlative form in most of our fixtures, but perhaps most notably during the 3-1 away win at Brentford.

United eventually won the game comfortably due to a dynamic attacking performance in the second half, but De Gea laid the platform for the win via seven stout saves, many of which came during a rocky first half for Ralf Rangnick's Reds.

De Gea was unfortunate to end up on the losing side during our 1-0 defeat to Wolves at the start of the month, but was again instrumental in the narrow wins over Aston Villa (Emirates FA Cup) and West Ham.
He made 22 saves across our four league games in January and, at the time of writing, no other Premier League goalkeeper has made more saves so far in 2021/22.

It means David now has three POTM awards for the season, which puts him one ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, who claimed the award in September and October.

De Gea is also the first Red to claim Player of the Month prizes in three consecutive months since our records began in 2016.

However, it should be noted that Bruno did win the award in February, March and June of 2020 – a sequence that was interrupted due to the Covid-enforced pause in the 2019/20 season.

De Gea is also climbing the club's all-time clean sheets list. He currently boasts an impressive 162, which puts him one above Gary Bailey in the club's table.

The 31-year-old needs 18 more to match Peter Schmeichel's club record of 180.

If his current form continues, there's every chance that could be toppled during the next 12 to 18 months!

Congratulations to David and all the other nominees, after a very solid month of performances.
