De Gea: We showed what United are about

Tuesday 20 October 2020 23:12

David De Gea has said Manchester United’s ‘massive’ 2-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night shows our strength of character.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men came away from the Parc des Princes with another famous Champions League victory, thanks to Bruno Fernandes’s first-half penalty and Marcus Rashford’s late winner.

David, who was part of the side who overcame PSG 19 months ago in Paris, knows the importance of starting our European group with three points.

Watch what David had to say after his award-winning performance against PSG on Tuesday night...

“It’s massive,” he told MUTV after the game. “You play away the first game against PSG and you know they’re a difficult, top team. To get the three points today for us is massive.

“It gives us confidence to keep going and now we have another big game on Saturday. We need to keep going and winning games.

“We had good memories of this stadium from the last time we played here. It was amazing but today we showed again we are Manchester United. We can beat big teams like PSG, playing well and creating good chances.

“I’m really proud and really happy for all the players, for the team and for the club, for everyone. That’s why we are Manchester United.”
United were superb on the front foot against PSG, but up against the dangerous trio of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Angel Di Maria, our defence also faced a busy night.

In particular, David was forced into acrobatic stops to deny Di Maria and Mbappe during the game, and made five saves in total.

Our no.1’s excellent display ensured he was voted Man of the Match by our supporters on our Official App. The keeper earned 21 per cent of the poll, just ahead of Rashford (17 per cent) and three players tied on 15 per cent - Bruno Fernandes, Axel Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

But speaking after the match, David wasn’t drawn into selecting which of his saves in the game was his favourite.

“All of them,” he said. “I always say that any save is important to help the team. I’m here to help and I played a good game today, like the whole team. We fight for the three points and we get them.”

The Spaniard was also keen to heap praise onto our match-winner. “It was another great goal from him [Rashford]. I’m happy for him; he deserved his goal. The whole team deserved the three points today.”
