Henderson ruled out of Euro 2020

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has been forced out of Euro 2020 due to a hip problem.

Our homegrown talent was not on the bench for England's 1-0 win over Croatia in the Group D opener but that was initially said to be as a precaution.

However, he was forced to work indoors away from the main group again on Monday and it has been decided that his involvement would be limited so the best course of action is to return to United for assessment and rehabilitation.

The Football Association said in a statement: "Aaron Ramsdale has replaced Dean Henderson in England’s UEFA Euro 2020 squad.

“Henderson withdraws with a hip issue that would continue to limit his involvement in training throughout the tournament.

“Under UEFA regulations, squads are permitted to replace goalkeepers on medical grounds at any stage.

“The Manchester United goalkeeper will now return to his club for further assessment and rehabilitation ahead of the 2021/22 season.

“Ramsdale was originally a member of Gareth Southgate’s pre-tournament group in Middlesbrough, having played for England at this year’s UEFA U21 Euro in Slovenia in March.

“The Sheffield United player, a 2017 UEFA U19 Euro winner, will now follow standard COVID-19 testing protocol before entering the camp.”

Sam Johnstone, another United Academy graduate who currently plays his club football with West Brom, is set to be promoted and become the deputy to Jordan Pickford, England's no.1. The Three Lions' next outing is on Friday night, against Scotland at Wembley.

Henderson's withdrawal means there are now 11 Reds at the tournament again - Diogo Dalot's call-up to the Portugal squad at the weekend had briefly boosted that number to 12.

There are three United men still in Southgate's England squad - Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford.
