Mitchell working hard on recovery

Wednesday 18 September 2019 10:31

Demi Mitchell is back in training but is naturally taking things carefully as he bids to recover full fitness.

The Manchester United left-back has been recording some great figures in the gym tests and was on the grass this week for the first time since sustaining an injury during a loan spell at Hearts last season.

With the medical team keeping a close eye on his development, the 22-year-old is pleased with how his rehabilitation is going.

We caught up with Demi Mitchell at the Aon Training Complex this week.

“It’s been a long time so I’m really happy to get back out for my first session back there,” he told us.

“I’m doing a few days’ training and then a couple of days off. I’m taking it slowly and just making sure I come back right. I’m not rushing things so I’m focused on making sure I am 100 per cent ready.

“I’ve been hitting some of my personal-bests in the gym, doing some of my strength stuff. I’ve been doing well and want to bring it on the pitch, when I can.

"When you’re beating your personal-bests, whether it’s sprinting or on the bench-press or anything, you just make sure you’re always improving and, when you get out on the pitch, that improvement is there as well. When you see those scores in there, it motivates you to think you can push on, push your body to where it needs to be.”

United’s staff have helped Mitchell, who made his senior debut for the club at the end of the 2016/17 season, and will continue to monitor him as he takes his next steps.

“Some of the physios have worked with me since the Under-15s," he added. "I know them well and communicate with them so they’ve helped me a lot. It definitely helps, whether it’s the coaching staff or physios, that you can have that good communication and talk to them to let them know how you’re feeling.

“They’ve been great with me and I think it’s important to listen to them as well as they listen to you. It’s your body but they’re the professionals and I think we’ve got that balance right.

Demi is working hard after being injured during a loan spell with Hearts last season.

“I just want to keep grinding, working hard and keep progressing and learning.

"It’s about getting fit and back playing games for the Under-23s. I need to get some match fitness to help me, whatever I’m doing come January [when the loan window opens]."
