Berbatov added to Legends squad

Friday 05 July 2024 15:00

Dimitar Berbatov will be part of the Manchester United squad, for the Legends game against Celtic in September.

The former Bulgaria international scored 56 goals in 149 games for the Reds between 2008 and 2012, winning two Premier League titles, the League Cup and the Club World Cup in the process.

Known for his swaggering style of play, silky touch and penchant for the spectacular, Berba remains in great shape five years after his retirement from football.

He was involved in the last Legends game at Old Trafford, scoring against Liverpool in 2022, and he joins former United team-mate Paul Scholes, and Class of '92 icon Nicky Butt as the initial players at manager Bryan Robson's disposal.

All The Goals | Here's 56 reasons why United fans loved Berba during his four-year stint at Old Trafford...

Dimitar has fond memories of playing against Celtic, having scored twice against the Bhoys in October 2008 - his first home European goals for United.

He will also be reacquainted with former international team-mate Stiliyan 'Stan' Petrov, who will be playing for the Glaswegians under manager Paul Lambert.

“It’s going to be great, because I’m seeing old team-mates from United, then I see my team-mates from the national team as well and players that I’ve played against,” said Berbatov.

“Like with Stan, we played together in the national team, but then we are playing against each other in the Premier League.

“So it’s always good to be back with the boys, have some banter, play some football, enjoy it and in the process just raise money for a good cause.

“I know what it means, because I have my own foundation for 16 years, supporting talented kids in Bulgaria and trying to show them the right way, the right way to success, hopefully.

“With United, it’s obviously a much bigger scale, a much bigger name, and it's good that we former players can have the chance to work and support the Foundation, raising money for all the different things that the Foundation is doing and just enjoying doing it while we play football.”
