Diogo Dalot after defeat v Brighton

Dalot: We created enough to beat Brighton

Sunday 11 January 2026 20:20

A disappointed Diogo Dalot felt Manchester United controlled the game and created enough to beat Brighton in Sunday's Emirates FA Cup third-round tie at Old Trafford.

United’s underwhelming 2-1 loss to the Seagulls has resulted in our elimination from the Emirates FA Cup.

Less than a week on from head coach Ruben Amorim’s tenure coming to an end, Dalot admitted it has been a challenging time.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Dalot said: "[It has been] really difficult. It's always a period that you have to find ways to solve problems really quickly. We have to adapt and go again."

Dalot had a goalscoring opportunity in the opening minutes of the game to put the Reds ahead, but was unable to capitalise.

The Portuguese international believed United created enough chances to win the game.

He added: "[But] then the red card gave us a disadvantage because we were on top of Brighton in the last moments. Overall, very disappointed because we wanted to go through. All the lads kept trying to find spaces, like I said, really disappointed because I think we deserved to win.”

Dalot was asked about the feeling that United have recently done enough to win games, but every chance given away to the opponent seems to result in a goal.

“Yeah, I think that’s something obviously that we have to look for," our no.2 added. "We are in the phase where every attack that they [the opponents] have has to be a big threat to us. We're conceding so many less shots on target, and we conceded one goal at least every game. We are always a threat. But then, where we stand for defending, I think we have to have a little bit more urgency as a team.”

Focus for Diogo and the rest of the team now turns to the Manchester derby, where United will be looking to bounce back from this evening’s disappointment.

Diogo felt the Reds created enough to win the game against Brighton, but it wasn't to be.

Dalot firmly believes that the next week is important "not just [for] the leaders, but all the group".

The defender added: "We have to find ways to overcome this. To find energy between each other, to come to training, be professional, try to give your best during the week, and to prepare for a big game, as we know that these types of games can change momentum.

"[It] can give the crowd a bit more energy to get us through. But to be honest, credit to them. Because even today in the difficult period, they [the fans] are always pushing us forward.”
