The Europa League trophy.

Revealed: The European sides United can face next

Monday 16 December 2019 09:43

Manchester United secured top spot in Europa League Group L thanks to a 4-0 win against AZ Alkmaar last Thursday night.

The victory means the Reds will be seeded for the draw for the knockout stages of the tournament, which takes place at 12:00 GMT in Nyon, Switzerland.

United are one of 32 teams in the hat for the next round, along with fellow Premier League clubs Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as Scottish sides Celtic and Rangers.
With the group stages of the competition all wrapped up, the Reds now know which teams we can be paired with in the knockout stage.

United will be drawn to play one of the unseeded teams and we could face one of 14 different sides, including the likes of Getafe, Sporting Lisbon, Eintracht Frankfurt and Roma, who all finished second in their respective Europa League groups.

When asked how important it was for the Reds to go through as group winners, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after the AZ game: "It was vital for us. It means we can have the second leg at home and we will play against a lower seeded team."

However, speaking before the victory, the manager warned: "You'll always play against good teams [in the next round] anyway and with our luck in the draws, we're going to get a good team!"
We could also face Club Brugge, Bayer Leverkusen, Olympiacos and Shakhtar Donetsk, who have dropped out of the Champions League, but we cannot be drawn to play Wolves as a fellow English side, or AZ Alkmaar, given we emerged from the same group.
